Will I be able to get the cat urine smell out?

How do I get rid of cat urine smell?

  • My friend has a cat. The cat uses the litter box most of the time but sometimes it doesnt . I go and visit my friend often but when I go in the house it smells like cat urine. I cant stand the smell. He sprays lysol and burns candles for me but it just covers it up.Is there anything that will get rid of the smell FAST? Please dont comment to get rid of the cat. He is an old man and the cat is his only company. He has tried everything to make the cat use the box but I think the cat is just getting old. I just would like to visit without the smell.

  • Answer:

There are actual products that make the smell go away, like an enzyme cleaner. And here's another bit about cat behavior when it comes to getting them to use a litter box. This is one case where human perception can help. Think about how much you'd like to use a toilet if it's not flushed regularly. Not very much, is it? Cats normally dig holes with their front paws to bury their waste in, but, if there's too much waste, they usually go just outside the litter box. If that's what's going on, then the best way to get the kitty to use the box again is to regularly clean it. That, and there are products at the local pet store that will not only get rid of the urine smell but get kitty to go back to the litter box in the first place.

Depends on where the smell is on. I always have all windows open, but of course I live in Israel where it's warm 90% of the time. On solid, resilient surfaces such as a stone of rubber/plastic floor or treated/varnished wood, bleach/chlorine or Cillit Bang helps. Fabric needs to be washed, end of story. Unfortunately, my cats sprayed on a nice deco-patched wooden item and there ain't much I can do about that. He should also find out why his cat is doing that. Is the cat neutered? If not, he should have it done. If he is, he could be frustrated with something. Peeing beyond the box is often a sign of malcontent. Has anything changed for the cat that could have caused him to act up? Like a move, or a new pet or new house rules/restrictions? Has his owner had him checked out for health problems? The best way to get rid of cat piss stink, is to have the cat cut it out but for that, the cause must be determined first. Mine started to piss - EIGHT cats! - when we got a real horrible dog. I know that because they stopped the moment we got rid of it. Then it was because they didn't like being locked up in the new apartment after we moved. When a cat is PISSED off, it can PISS off the whole place ;)

Covering odors don't work. Take him to any pet supplies store and have him get an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle or Unique, and use that on any spots the cats peed on. It removes all traces of the organics. Turn off the lights and use a black light to find the 'used' areas around the room. A black light can be bought at any hardware store. It's just a light bulb.

There are several urine enzyme products available at most major pet chains, Walmart, Target, local pet stores etc. I find that Nature's Miracle, Urine Gone work very well. You can also purchase a small black light flashlight which in a darkened room when shined over the carpet will show all the spots that the car peed on. These are the areas that need to be treated. Vinegar and ammonia will do no good at all and most "home" remedies will fail as well. I am sorry for your friends loss and I am sure that his friend does miss him/her. Unless you remove the entire order of urine the cat will continue to go in those spots. One more thought, has your friend had the cat checked for a UTI (urinary tract infection) since this also will cause potty issues. I hope this is of some help to you.

You need to find an enzyme cleaner. You should not have to scrub with good enzyme cleaners. It is important to remember that you need to saturate the affected area in order to reach all the uric acid crystals left behind from the urine. Don't skimp on using the product. You will be wasting your time and money! If the stains and odor are old, you may even need to apply a second treatment. Check with your local animal shelter to see if they can recommend a product that is available locally.

You need something to neutralise it not try to cover it up (as this doesn't work). Try the local pet store as they sell sprays to neutralise animal smells. try any of the following links for ideas on how to get rid of the smell

I also suggest Nature's Miracle and a black light. Additionally you can use Precious Cat litter attractant to help retrain the cat to use only the litter box. He could still be upset about the other cat but I doubt it really. It has been too long for the loss to be affecting him so it is probably something else. That something else could be a health problem as is very often the case with inappropriate urination. Please VERY strongly suggest to your friend that he bring the cat in for a check-up as quickly as possible. Cats with urinary tract problems can go downhill and die rapidly so your friend needs to get this ruled out asap.

The best cleaner on the market is called Anti Icky Poo. Weird name, I know. It's an enzyme cleaner that yuo spray the areas and leave on. It will eat the urine up and get rid of the smell. You can get it off their website or off Amazon. I use it. I have a female who marks territory in my house and it works on furniture, hardwood, anything. When a cat doesn't use the litter box all the time it's usually because they are marking territory. Another cat who is not fixed is coming around the house. If the cat has a kidney or urinary infection the only way he has to tell the owner "I don't feel well" is to go outside the box. Take the cat to the vet if he has money. The cat may need help!

'try pouring vinager on it.

Home Remedy for cat urine smell. This is a great recipe for removing cat urine odor from carpet. Start by blotting up as much of the urine as possible with old rags or paper towels. Next mix 3 parts water with one part vinegar and saturate the spot.Dry thoroughly using the same method mentioned above. Once dry, sprinkle the area with Baking Soda. Next mix ¾ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with one tsp. dish detergent and sprinkle over the Baking Soda. Try this first on a small inconspicuous area of the carpet to make sure the hydrogen peroxide won’t discolor your carpet. Next, use your fingers or an old brush to work the Baking Soda in. I’ve used an old hairbrush with little bits of plastic over the tips with good results. Allow this to dry and vacuum it up. If there’s still a slight odor when done, lather, rinse and repeat. cat urine 4Remove cat urine odor from laundry.
