What are the side effects of Methadone for pain?

Side effects of pain meds in kittens?

  • I have a 4 month old Siamese kitten. She was spayed last Wednesday and they had to open her back up after the surgery because she wouldn't stop bleeding. They got everything fixed and ended up giving her some blood. The vet kept her over night for 2 days to keep watch on her. When we brought her home on Friday she was still out of it because of the pain meds and would growl if you petted her back end. Sunday morning she started acting like her normal self again: grooming herself, eating, drinking water, using the litter box, and scratching on her scratching post. Well yesterday morning she was still drinking and eating but then later in the day she started pulling on her stitches. So I called her vet and she said that it's normal and when they do that it usually means their healed so not to worry about it. Well after she started pulling on them she started to growl at you again if you picked her up or petted her. My mom went ahead and gave her some pain meds thinking she may have made herself sore from pulling on them. The vet said that it was a good idea that we did that. Last night before we went to bed she drank a bunch of water and used the litter box but didn't eat anything. This morning she still hasn't really been eating. She still has been drinking a lot. So, I was wondering is a side effect of the pain medication her not having an appetite and being tender? The stitches look fine and it's not infected. So is it just the pain medication making her all irritable and sassy? We can take the stitches out in two days.

Other answers

The pain medication will likely make her very thirsty. A side effect of pain medication is not more pain. A side effect of surgery is pain and tenderness. That will make her irritable. As for lack of appetite, she may just be off-schedule and it will take her some time to get back to a regular routine.
