How should I set up my home theater?

How do I set up my PS3 with my new Samsung 7.1 Home Theater system?

  • Okay, so here's the breakdown: I just bought a brand new Samsung 55" 3D LED TV, the newest model, and a new 7.1 3D Audio/Blu Ray Player Samsung Home Theater System. I also just bought a new 320GB PS3. All this is replacing my old 42" LCD Hitachi, 5.1 Samsung Home Theater System with a Blu Ray playing receiver, and an old 60GB PS3 with an upgraded hard drive. I'd like to start off by saying that my previous setup worked great, but I needed to upgrade, which I'm now having quite a problem setting up. When I first set it all up, I connected everything the same way as I had my previous setup. My 7.1 receiver connected to the TV via HDMI. My PS3 connected to the TV via HDMI. And a digital optic cable from my 7.1 receiver to my TV. It worked great just like my old setup, except that I'm unaware if there were any drawbacks because I'm aware that digital optic cables only have the potential to reach 5.1 (Does that matter? I mean I have an HDMI from my receiver to my TV anyways.) So now that I've told you all of this. Here comes the problem. Not too long after I hooked up my 7.1, about two weeks ago to be exact, I experienced some audio issue. Let me start off by saying that I used my surround to watch some television and it worked fine. I used it to play Fallout New Vegas on my ps3 and it worked fine. I used it to watch Mortal Kombat via Netflix on my ps3, and that also worked fine. By fine, I mean it's awesome (by the way)! After all that I thought "this is great, I love it", but then I played The "Battle Field 3 Faultine" trailer on my PS3. As soon as they guy gets sniped in the parking lot in the trailer, my sound went dead, as if it were on mute. I couldn't here anything, but my receiver was still on. The only way to get my audio back on was to cycle through the functions with function button on the remote from D. IN (digital in) all the way through to D. IN again, or by turning my surround on and off. But my sound would go dead again during certain noises in the trailer. The same noises too (so if I were too rewind it right before the part where the guy gets sniped and press play, my audio would go dead again.) My audio seems to do this during trailers which sucks. It was also really embarrassing when it happened in front of my friends. My solution to this wasn't the best: I unplugged the digital optic cable from my TV and plugged it into my PS3 and then switched my audio settings on my PS3 from HDMI sound to Digital Optic Cable Sound (and I checked all the boxes for 5.1 and stuff). So now, I'm stuck with 5.1 again, only it's only on my PS3. My TV isn't using surround unless I plug the Digital Optic Cable back into it again. And I'm not using my 7.1 like my original intention was when I bought this. I was text chatting online with a Samsung Bot/Representative and the best explanation they gave me was that the trailer wasn't able to be converted or transmitted to 7.1 therefore it does that, which isn't a very good explanation. WHY would I buy this then if it can't play a game trailer?? It also doesn't make sense because some of what I've played on my PS3 and watched on Television and Netflix haven't been made for 7.1 yet the audio was PERFECTLY FINE. Why my trailers? So does anyone have any suggestions or answers? When I had it setup to the digital in to my TV, I left my sound setting on my PS3 in HDMI audio and on the default CH. 2.1 because Messing with all the 7.1's and different frequencies seemed endless and going nowhere. Please, someone with knowledge on this give me some insight! It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking your time to hear me cry for tech support, haha.
