Why do rear speakers are not working?

Why aren't my rear surround sound speakers working? (Direct Tv)?

Ok so, I have a newish 750 7 Series Samsung TV and a Samsung surround system. I also use Direct TV. I currently have it setup as such. HDMI From my Direct tv to my Television, and Optical Cable from the TV to the surround sound. I am unable to access any settings of the surround sound, because I guess there is no HDMI cable plugged into the surround sound, but I dont believe that is the issue. The front 3 speakers and the subwoofer work fine, but the two rear speakers have no sound coming from them. Does anyone have any remedies? Thanks. PS I believe this is a directtv issue if anything...

Keep in mind that not all tv program have surround sound, only those tv program that have the Dolby Digital Logo will have surround sound. That is the reason that you are not hearing anything coming from the rear speakers. Hope this will help you out.
