How do I hook up my surround sound system to TV to PS3?

How to hook my PS3 up to surround sound?

  • Hey i want to hook my ps3 up to a 5.1 surround sound system. I need to know what speaker system to buy, Im looking for one under $150.00 and i would like it to use the optical audio output on the ps3. Also i have a 46" Google TV with a optical audio output. so if the surround sound system could have two optical audio inputs that would be great. Ive been looking into this for a while now and i don't understand this optical audio decoding and other stuff, and a lot of the speaker systems Ive seen don't have optical audio inputs. Is there any other ways to hook up surround sound? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated i'm so confused.

  • Answer:

PS3 with HDMI to the TV, Optical out of TV to surround sound, change the audio setting on the TV to "external speakers" or digital audio out or whatever it's called. if the surround sound you're looking to buy doesn't have optical audio, I wouldn't buy it. Ideally the surround sound would have an HDMI input (or more than one input) and one HDMI output... then you don't have to mess with optical audio, if the receiver has two HDMI inputs, your cable box and PS3 would go into the receiver, and one HDMI out to the TV and that's it. you might have to spend a little more on surround sound but it's worth it.

Just hook the ps3 up to your tv how you normally would. Then find the audio out on your tv and connect rca cables to audio out to your surround sound amplifier. Easy as 123
