How do I hook up surround sound?

How do I hook up my new surround sound?

  • I just got a new Yamaha receiver and 5.1 surround sound speaker set. I have a Vizio 550A 55" lcd tv. Right now i have a comcast hd dvr hooked up to the tv with an hdmi cable and a Vizio blu-ray player hooked up to the tv with an hdmi cable. I am thinking the best way is to use the optical output on the tv and hook it to the receiver. There are no HDMI "outs" on my tv so is that my only option? Is there a way to hook the tv to the receiver with hdmi? I want to make it so the surround just works with whatever I am watching, the tv or the blu-ray player. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

Well, your BluRay player's HDMI Out should go to the receiver HDMI in, preferrably an input marked as disc player input. That will send sound and video from the BluRay into the receiver. Then, another HDMI from the receiver's HDMI Out into the TV's HDMI In sends that audio/video path to the TV. The digital optical audio cable goes from the TV Audio Out into the TV Audio in, at the receiver. That will allow you to put the TV audio into the receiver. There are no HDMI Outs on the TV because the TV has no need to send a video signal elsewhere.

Do not route the audio from the TV to the receiver, route the audio from any devices hooked to the TV from the audio ports on the back of the devices. Mute your TV, use your stereo only for audio.

Sounds like that would be your best option, that way the sound from the receiver will follow what you are watching.
