What surround sound system is better for me?

Surround Sound System advice.. What do I look for in a good system?

I was told by my mom that she wants to get me a new surround sound system for my room that will go good with my new hdtv which is a magnavox 32 inch lcd flat screen. I have a small bedroom which size is about 11 X 14. I am trying to get one that has the best quality sound and the speakers would not go out on me after a month having them. I have a small system right now, it's an RCA 3131, It has 130 watts power and 5.1 speaker set up. But I get a static noise in them after its been on for a while. This gets annoying so I have to turn it off and turn it on again after awhile. So my question for anyone out there is what should I do? What should I look for in a good system? I know nothing about this but I know I love the sound it has. Help Please!
