Best Home theater 5.1 speakers to buy ?

  • Hi, I have a large room for my Home Theater - about 20x20. Looking to buy speakers for a 5.1 setup. Are the Energy Rc Micro a good choice considering the size of the Room ? What other speakers would be good in the same price range ? (500-700$) Also looked at the boston acoustics Soundware. I would like to keep the size of the speaker small - I don't have space for tower speakers. thanks

    Questions like this are very hard to answer. Home Theater Magazine recently tried to make this process easier with a top picks section. That is, what do they like the most out of the vast amount of equipment they reviewed. Try perusing this list http://www.hometheater.com/compact-speaker-top-picks Oh, and take the amount of power RMS put out by the receiver and multiply it by 1.25 (125%) to get the minimum power rating to buy. Or take the speaker rating and multiply it by the inverse (80% or .8) to get the maximum sized amplifier to use.

A huge 20x20 room and you dont have space for towers? The Polk RT, Energy Micro and Definitive ProMonitor are all great, small speakers, but dont expect them to fill that room. This is normally not a problem because you surround the chairs with the speakers so you dont really care about filling the room except for the sub. You can get away with small speaker but that size room really needs a more-powerful-than-average subwoofer. Just make sure whatever system you get comes with a self-powered subwoofer so you can upgrade later.
