How To Find Consolidated Internet Speed?

Is the download speed the actual speed of the Internet? If not, how can I find out the speed of my Internet?

    Assuming you are not running any other downloading/uploading programs when you run the test, and download speed test is a good indication of your internet speed. However this comes with a few caveats, uit is a burst speed, meaning its a small file over a short period of time. If you are constantly downloading a file, then your ISP may throttle your speed down. Second, speed on the internet is relative. Depending on where the server you are getting data from is located, how many pathways it has to take to get to your computer and how swamped the server that is sending your file from is at the time, your speed can vary greatly. In truth its almost impossible to get an accurate test of your speed. But like I said in the begninning, they do give you a good general idea of your speed, even if its not fully accurate.

The download speed is not necessarily the speed of your connection. You can check your connection speed at http://www.speedtest.net/. Just make sure you're not downloading anything. Note: this method is not accurate 100% of the time, check it a couple of times and the best result is your speed.

http://www.speedtest.net/ just click on the little yellow pyramid, it's worth noting if you are using ADSL you'll probably never get the speeds advertised by your ISP
