What does a server do?

What's the best way to set up a Media Server?

• Hello I would like to know some opinions on what's the best way to set up a home/media server. The server will be used to share Media like music and videos at my friends home. So it should be directly accessible from the computers at his home (which includes both Mac and Vista systems). He also wants me and some other friends to be able to upload/download over the web, so we can all contribute to administrative tasks and keeping the server orderly. But at the same time the server needs to be secure, so nobody else has access to his home server. So our ideal solution would bring us: -FAST and EASY access to the server via the internet and through the internal network (LAN). -Security (I guess a password would do) -lots of storage space. As far as I know, an ftp server would allow us to do all that. But what's the best ftp server solution we could set up for ourselves? Or is there a better method to share these items, maybe one that allows direct streaming from the server to the television? Any ideas and helpful comments are welcome. Thank you.

  Hi The best way is wireless. Just get a wireless router and setup a connection. If you want to connect all your accessories together they all have to support DLNA. I have 500GBs of MP3 and I use Winamp Remote to connect it to my PS3 and use the musics from anywhere in the world. :D There are many other ways to do this as well.
