What is a good gaming router?

Is D-Link DI-604 a good cheap gaming router? if not what is?

  • I currently have a netgear router.. turns out it has a major issue with steam where it locks up thinking it has a DOS attack, so i have to get a new one, i was wondering is that the best cheap router there is out there? or is there another one that can compete with the price that performs better, (ps i can buy for 20 on ebay right now i only want to go to 30$ tops but there has to be a bit better performance for the price) Also if anyone knows does it have any issues with steam or any online games? i hear its stable but i want to hear what you think, thanks!

  • Answer:

You don't necessarily need a "gaming" router, just a good one. I have a Netgear and hate it, so we upgraded to a Linksys WRT160N in late 2008 and it works a lot better. The stock firmware on the 160N doesn't work very well (kept dropping connections and restarting randomly) so I installed a custom firmware called DD-WRT. This adds a ton of functionality and makes the router work a lot better. I do a ton of gaming on the router (PC and Xbox 360, sometimes having 3 Xbox 360's running at the same time on it) and it has never dropped a connection or lagged out (the Internet connection has though). I am tempted to buy another WRT160N (you can get them for about $30 refurbished) so I can have another great router to use away from home.
