What exactly is 3G and why is it more expansive than WiFi?

What could I use if I want internet access on my laptop and iPad2 using WiFi (without 3G) and not using cable?

  • I'm in an apt that is not hooked up to cable (believe it or not, in this day and age!), nor is there a phone jack to use DSL. I'm not interested in getting cable, nor even their internet access only plans. I just want internet use on my laptop & iPad using WiFi... however, there isn't always an available network or strong signal. What can I purchase, without using traditional cable plans, to get my own WiFi access? Do I have to purchase one of those MiFi hotspots? If those things use 3G networks, then would I be using up data when I'm just using the WiFi (and not going through the 3G network)? Or to use the WiFi means that you are using 3G network data?? I apologize in advance for being a complete novice to this stuff and my understanding between WiFi and 3G (and what counts towards data usage) is hazy at best. If anyone could shed any light or give some advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

    Access point i guess edit : they use dial up with modem cable or what ? if they use rj 45 (internet cable) you can attach access point if not use mifi

I would look at the 4G/3G MiFi devices. If you happen to live in a Sprint 4G area, it is Unlimited. These devices simply create a wifi spot that you can connect to and it's totally portable.
