Is there a way to fix home folder permissions remotely?

How to share a folder outside of home network?

  • I need to give write-access to a folder with many files to a person outside of my home network. I'm trying to do this: I have an assistant in the Philippines and I would like her to organize my music collection. I want to give her access to my entire collection. Then have her load all my music in iTunes on her PC then go through and fix tags, add cover art etc. P.S. I know there is software for organizing MP3s, and I use it, but it still takes forever and have a lot of music. How can I easily share a folder for this purpose? Or is there any other way to accomplish this? Thanks

  • Answer:

you could copy all your files to a dropbox account. Then, give him/her the password to the account, let him/her organize. Then, resynch the dropbox to your PC. Easy. Dropbox isn't the only cloud storage out there, but it is nice. 2GB of Dropbox for free, more if you pay.

Doing so is a major security threat especially to users on a home network. Doing so may also get you in trouble with your ISP - bandwidth issues. I would recommend a safer approach such as using TeamViewer to allow your assistant to control your computer remotely over a secure server. HOWEVER, if you would like to pursue your original plan, then the following might help you: 1. Create a file sharing server on your network. 2. Port forward to that file sharing server. 3. Wallah! Although... I don't think your assistant will be able to modify your files... Again, built in security stuffs... G'luck!
