  hi johnathan ratliff, used to be there was a network was a chain letter but what actually started real change in social networking was nasa placed a satiflight up in space so you could go with dialup services then they placed more in space and look out dsl broadband. so with dialup services to get a signal would be from the servicer themselves. but with broadband it came in through a satilight right to your modem right in the house so this is still a great advancement. i have a dialup service right in my town but i have broadband dsl do you know i can't even go in there to buy a disk from them what they said is if everybody does that they will be out of business. that is really too bad i like my broadband and i don't care if they go out of business or not. but then social networking it is amazing to be able to talk to people from other countries and not cost a dime for the call so that is an advancement that we take for granted. good luck hope i was helpful to you
