Why won't Skype and Yahoo Messenger connect to the Internet?

My Internet Explorer and Firefox connect to the internet but when I downloaded Skype and Yahoo Messenger and tried to make an account or sign on, it should that neither one would connect to the internet. Can someone explain why and how to fix it, please?

Answer:
Perhaps the firewall is blocking access? If you are using one what kind of firewall are you ussing. If you do not recall installing any then it might be the Windows firewall (a nasty piece of softwar) and i suggest installing another firewall (I use COMODO).
