LG5700 HDTV, problems displaying computer using a DVI to HDMI cable? Please read!?

Hi, I have bought a DVI to HDMI cable. I have a LG5700 HDTV / a nVidia GeForce 8600gt xxx graphics card and windows vista. Using a DVI to HDMI cable I have tried to clone the monitor through the nvidia control panel but it doesnt work. Ive read that you have to change the resolution / refresh rate but i am unable to change any of this in the nvidia control panel (doesnt let me) or through windows (changes back to 800x600). I know I cant be goin that wrong as sumtimes my monitor screen flashes up on the HDTV but then goes and turns black and then proceeds just to change from black intensity quickly. I have tried the first DVI port and the same thing. PLEASE HELP!!! Please, if any1 has a solution they will get themselves best answer and my thanks ^-^
