Is cable or dsl more popular?

Cable DSL router with 4 port switch not connecting computers though says it is.?

  • We are trying to get router to work so household can get our 5 computers working for internet access. Initially was told to buy a switcher by best buy salesperson to connect to our motorola modem that connects to dsl filter connected to phone jack via at&t. That was wrong, as we have no modem we discovered when it didnt work. So I returned the switch in trade for a linksys cable/dsl router with 4port switch. Says on box and salesperson said it just needs plugged into modem via far left hole in back , and all computers get connected via cat 5 and 6 cables to our various computers. Then just plug in power to the dsl router and all computers then get on internet - easy. NOT! Still not working. And the "Check router status" in setup cd program that came with router says "Router not found. Please make sure router is properly connected and try again." But it IS connected properly. The cable from modem is connected to the port located apart from 4 ports to its right. 4 ports have dsl ethernet cat 5 or 6 cables connected to our various laptops, mac and desktop. And now I cant even get on by direcltly connecting a cable to modem after trying to use the router, am by grace skimming on a neighbors wireless signal weak as it is. What the heck! I called best buy for help as this is not simple and straightforward as they or the linksys cd install instructions portray it to be! I did every step as instructed to no help. Internet connections say they are connected, but when opening a internet browser as usually works before these products were used, there is no actual internet connection. Cant actually get online. Arrgghhh! I dont know what to do? Step by step, how to do and how to do what to do I need. As some people say "just" ping this or do that. But I need to know how to do what im supposed to do. This is supposed to work by plug and play but it is not. Help

Hi There, You may need to set up your internet connection on each computer again. go through the control; panel to Network and Internet connections and select "set up or change your internet connection". On the next box click the "set up" tab " to open up the wizard. Follow the instructions. If windows can't find the connection you need then you might call your ISP and get some advice from them. Even if it costs a service call at least you will know what is wrong. Hope this helps, Al Hope this helps, al

MY PROBLEM WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS YOURS! I FOUND THIS WEBSITE AND FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS AND WAS ABOUT TO GIVE UP. I UNPLUGGED THE ROUTER ONE LAST TIME PLUGGED IT BACK IN AND IT WORKED! Please plug the router's power adapter directly to the power socket (Do not connect the modem and the router yet). Press the reset button on the router's back panel for 10 seconds using a pin. After the reset, please do these: 1. Connect the PC to the port one of the router then restart it. (This PC port should be the one that can get online if directly connected to the modem). 2. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP). 3. When "Internet Explorer" opens type http://192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go. 4. The log-in window will appear. 5. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK. 6. Click on the Setup tab, then click on the MAC Address Clone sub tab, enable it and click on "Clone your PC's MAC" then save the settings. 7. Look for the LAN IP which is 192.168.1.1. 8. Change the IP address to 192.168.2.1 then save the settings. 9. Connect the modem into the router's Internet port and wired PCs into the router's numbered ports. 10. Power cycle. To do a power cycle, please power off the computer, router then the modem. After 3 minutes, power on the modem, wait for the lights to stabilize, then the router, again, wait for the lights to stabilize, and lastly, the computers
