My wifi router is on but no wifi connection!!!!!!!!!1?

ok, what it say is that wifi is on , internet is on but when i search, for my connection it doesnt show up in the wifi network searching only my neighbours and so forth, BUT when i take the ethernet cable and plug it in the router and in the laptop i get internet!!!!!! why is this happening, i cant realy manage it like that coz i use the laptop upstairs and the router is downstairs, help pls!!!!!1

Is your router set to broadcast your network name? It is a check box on the router security page. If it is not checked your router will not show up~
