How do I fix this problem with my iTunes?

How can I fix this problem with iTunes?

  • I got a new laptop a few months ago, so I needed to transfer all of my music to it. At first I didn't do it because I thought it would take too long, so I just authorized my laptop to play my music. Then I decided I wanted to be able to control the files from my laptop. I went to the Apple website and it said to create a home network, and to make my iTunes library a shared file. It said to open iTunes on my laptop and go to File>Add Folder to Library and then select the iTunes library. I did it and everything was working fine. I was annoyed because the song ratings did not carry over, but it wasn't a huge deal to go through and rate every song. Then when I went on vacation recently I found out that I could not listen to my music because I was not connected to my home network. When I would try to play a song it would say that it could not locate the original file, but I thought that I had already downloaded it on to my new computer. I just want to have all the files permanently on my laptop, without losing the ratings I have assigned to them. Is there any way to do this? Please help!

hey, i just did the same thing you did 2 days ago. lol heres what you do, if you have two computers hooked on 1 network, (ex. a home network) and if you have vista, copy all of your files in your itunes libary, and then go to start, network, and then click on the your computer's public folder, paste those files into that folder, then go onto the other computer and then go to the public shared folder, (oh and make sure you have file sharing enabled on both computers) make a new folder on the desktop and then paste those files from the public shared folder into the new folder on the desktop or the itunes on that computer.

Other answers

In addition to moving your music, you'll also need to carry over the iTunes library files themselves. Be sure to keep your music in the exact same folder structure and then edit the iTunes library file to reflect any changes in the main path structure.
