How do I hook up my network printer to my router so my 3 computers can use it?
-
First of all, thank you for reading my question! I will give you as many facts as I can so you can answer to the best you can. 1) I have 3 computers in the house total. One is a desktop that has the modem hooked up to it. The router also sits next to this computer. Another is a desktop on the other side of the house. I have a ethernet wire hooked to this computer, and it plugs into the router. The last computer is a laptop that wirelessly uses the modem. 2) My router is a Netgear, and has 2 open ports on it. 3) The printer I am trying to use is a HP 4600N Laser. I bought it auction style, and I do not have the disk it was born with. This printer does have a network card. 4) I plugged an ethernet wire from the printer to the router. I tried to find the printer through the printers folder on all three computers, and it's not listed on any. 5) I am running Windows XP Professional on all three computers. 6) I did try to go to the HP site to download the software several times, and I keep getting an error message, so no software as of yet. If you know where I can get the original software, please let me know that as well. I was able to download the drivers...but the computers don't even recognize the printer yet. 7) I've read numerous articles online, and everyone has a different story. Everything from "creating a domain", to "router must be printer compatable". I read the Netgear website, and it states it should be just fine. 8) I don't want to have a computer on all the time. I want any of the three computers to be able to print at any given time. To wrap this up...the printer has an ethernet wire going from itself, to the router. There is no printer cable hooked up. Basically, nothing else is done. I've undone everything so far because nothing has worked! :) Please be very specific with your answer. I am not network smart at all. Thank you in advance for your help! First one that answers correctly will get "best answer", and a few beers if you're in my area!!

Answer:
You should be able to get the correct software fromHP http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=77519&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=74301 and installation instructions http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SupportTaskIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=115&prodSeriesId=74301&prodTypeId=18972&supportTaskId=23046 To get the ethernet to work, open the menu (on the printer)..go to network settings, be sure the printer is set to DHCP! The setup instructions Here is the user guide (I can't type all the symbols here that you will need!) http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/bpl11903/bpl11903.pdf All links are to HP specific for the 4600 series. add: the printer will not show in the printer folder untill drivers are installed on the computer, the printer is just a network device and does have a webserver active once connected to your router! you can find it using a web browser if you can find its IP on your routers dhcp list!
