How do I setup a dns server?

How do I setup an external DNS server on the internet?

  • Say that I purchase the domain example.com from godaddy.com. I want to create an external facing DNS server on my network so that it is my server that is answering name resolution queries when people on the internet try to go to example.com . This is important to me because in the future I want to be easily able to create subdomains be able to create an active directory subdomain as well. I See plenty of documentation on how to install a dns server whether it be for BIND or Winblows, but what do I have what actions do I have to take so that my DNS provider or registrar knows that I want to host my own DNS serves which will be responsible for example.com? Thanks in advance! :-)
