My computer screen randomly goes black?

Computer screen goes dim/black?

  • Here's the stuff that's happening: After leaving my PC unattended long enough for the screen to go black, I move the mouse to bring the screen back. It stays on for about 3-5 seconds, then goes extremely dim in a way you'd think it was entirely black. So I shut the monitor off for a few seconds. I turn it back on. The screen stays on for about 1-3 seconds, and does the same thing again. This goes on for about 5-15 minuets, until at the end, the screen gradually stays on longer, and eventually does not go black again. The only way to stop this is if something like a security update happens and I install something. I've restarted my computer, and turned it off, but even during startup, when everything is still loading (when you hear that little Windows sound), it will do this. I have had Norton Antivirus for about 2 years, if that makes any difference. What should I do??

  • Answer:

It sounds to me as if your monitor is going bad, especially if it is a CRT BUT....it could also be something with your graphics card or related system drivers. My first guess (CRT is bum) is probably correct. I'd first check all the connections and if that does not do it, then test whether your system will power another monitor by borrowing a monitor from a friend and firing up your machine (or take your machine to them...whatever is easier.) If Bum...good flat panel's are inexpensive nowadays. As to other theories, you did not post much info about your system hardware or operating system. I'll only offer some guesses: First, if it is Windows, then try booting into Safe Mode just to load minimal drivers...and see if the monitor functions better there. If it does (or even if it does not, then it may be something with the graphics card or drivers. ....it might be easier to answer if we knew what operating system (e.g. Windows Vista or XP) as it is possible that some of the power options on the system aren't correct.
