Can i use a usb modem with my ps3 for an internet connection?

Can I somehow use my USB ADSL modem with a router with a WAN socket, by feeding the connection through my PC?

  • Hey guys, I have ADSL internet, and I've managed to procure a modem that I plug into my computer via a USB cable. I also have a router that only has 4 ethernet output ports and a WAN input. I quite clearly cannot put this modem into this router. Is there anyway to plus my ADSL into the modem, my modem into my computer, and my computer into my router? Or is this just not possible? If not, can anyone recommend a simple ADSL modem with an ethernet port that ISN'T a modem/router combi. Because that's just hassle I can't quite get my head around. =(

Ok, let me see if I understand you. You have a PC, an ADSL Modem and a Router. You want to connect one or more computers to the internet. Your Router is just a switch not a ADSL Modem Router right? Point 1. The 4 Ethernet ports are for connecting computers to via a ethernet cable to make a network of computers. They are if you like input/output but only internally to your home (i assume home) so computer 1 can talk to computer 2 and so on up to 4 computers. Point 2. The WAN port is an output channel from your router. Routers work on a fairly simple premise. They pass packets of information from one PC to another if the address being communicated with is part of your internal network (i.e. 192.168.0.x probably) the messages flow over the 4 ethernet ports. If the address (ip address) is not part of the internal network i.e. you called a web page, that message is passed out on the WAN port, because its address is not part of your internal network and therefore the router does not know what to do with it. In other words I cannot deal with this so its somebody else's problem. Now if you can make your Router connect to your Modem i.e. Router WAN port to Modem connection that currently connects to your PC and the Router to the Phone systems and you have an ethernet cable to connect PC to router you may be in business. This will need the Modem to connect to your ISP automatically though. Does it do that or does the PC do the connection and logon? To be absolutely honest if you have 50 quid go an buy a ADSL Modem Router. They are really simple to setup and if you cannot you will get lots of help here. (keep the router you have as a backup till it all works) There are just to many unknowns with what you are trying to do especially as you dont appear to have much of a grasp of whats what in this area.

Just buy and ADSL modem router - its one box, does ADSL and routing all in one, cost £45

Sounds like the router you have is a cable router (NTL/Virgin). The modem is obviously ASDL and as such has a usb and a phone connection. A cable modem connects to their box via ethernet or via a router. The router allows internet sharing either wirelessly if it's a wireless router or via ethernet cables. If you access your isp via your phone line you have two options. USB modem or combined router/modem. The 2nd option is really simple to set up, and if you buy the device from your isp will work out of the box. Don't forget that a router also adds a hardware firewall which adds another layer of protection.
