How to join a server domain?

  • So my group set up a Windows 2008 64-bit server and installed AD, DNS, DHCP, with a couple other roles. We also set up a Windows XP Professional SP2 64-bit machine to use as a client computer. We were testing to see if the computer could join to the domain set up on the server. The Domain is WINS-FORMAT and the forrest level name WINS-FORMAT.com. The server successfully hands out ip addresses and the XP machine obtained an ip address. We also set up a user Group "Lounge" and added a test user to the group. The user name for that account is "Betty" and the password "1Password". So the problem: When trying to add that computer to the domain so that edifferent users can log onto their accounts from that computer, the XP machine will say it can't find that domain. We trying the domain names "WINS-FORMAT" and "WINS-FORMAT.com". Why can't the Client computer connect or access the domain?

  • Answer:

Are you adding the computer or Are you adding the user... two different things. It seems like you setup a user only [email protected]... Now add a computer or more users to your domain...

Can you ping the DC? Are both machines in the same IP range? Is the subnet mask, default gateway and DNS correct on the client? Is the cabling done correctly, including routers, switches, et cetera? Do you enter the correct username (WINS-FORMAT\Administrator) and password when adding the client to the domain? What does the Eventlog say?

Did you run DCPROMO on the server? If not, do so.
