How does replacing a router work?

Router does not work after replacing modem?

  • I have Yahoo DSL. I recently replaced my old modem with a new one provided by AT&T. Now, I cannot get my Linksys modem to work. Any ideas? Internet works fine when I connect directly to PC, but problems when I implement the router.

  • Answer:

The modem shouldn't have a lot to do with the actual router working. If you are having issues connecting to the internet through the linksys "router" I would check the connection coming from the AT&T modem. Make sure the Ethernet cord "it looks like an over sized phone cord" is plugged into the internet port on the back of the router. Are you trying to connect wirelessly to this router or hardwired to it. If you are hardwired to the linksys check the configuration. that can be achieved by. 1. opening up a webpage. 2. typing this ip address into the address bar 192.168.1.1 its the ip address for your linksys. 3. its going to ask you for a username and password. USERNAME: "leave blank" PASSWORD: type "admin" that is a default username and password for the router. if that doesnt grant you access ask someone in the household who might know what they are. If nobody knows the only option is to reset the router. hold the reset button on the back of the router for 4-5 seconds, and try the default username and password again. I would check with your service provider to see what type of a connection type they have set out for you. configure the router and try connecting again. Any questions please ask.

First unplug the power of modem. Then unplug power of the router. Wait for two mins, then plug power for modem first. Waiting two mins for all the internet light on the modem to show activity, then plug power for router. Wait two mins. Try to get on the internet. If that doesn't work, check your physical connections, is the router plugged into the right port on your modem? Has your DSL login information changed? Take a look at the router configuration page and make sure it has the correct username and password for your DSL account.

Have you tried resetting the router settings? What model is the router?
