How much is the average WiFi router?

How do I connect My Desktop with USB Wifi to my router through the ethernet card for wifi in my house?

  • I have an older desktop with 2 ethernet cards, one is on the board. I bought a usb wifi adapter (D-Link 124 / 159...)to put desktop on the web and update;. I have a laptop with a dell wireless 1390 mini pci card built in. In addition I got a Linksys wireless router. I want to use my desk top and usb wifi connection to connect to my router, Create my own little secured network that runs in my house through my linksys router. I can connect on both machines, but have trouble sharing the internet connection from my desktop. I kind of want to make a hot spot with my desktop using it's usb internet, through the Intel ethenet pci card and to my linksys router so that all of the phones, and laptops can share the hot-spot. I have permission, but can't figure out the details for the router. Desktop is WinXP Pro, and Laptop is Win 7 Ultimate. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance

  • Answer:

You are making things too complicated. You don't share the desktop's internet connection, that's what the router is for. You connect the WAN port of the router to your ISP's device (cable modem, DSL modem). You then connect one of your LAN ports on your desktop to one of the LAN ports on your router. Or alternatively, you can use the USB WiFi adapter if the desktop is going to be in another room, but the wired connection is preferable. You then connect all your wireless devices to the wireless network you set up in the router.
