How to share my printer on home network?

Can I set up a wireless home network and between a laptop (XP) and desktop (Vista), and share a printer?

  • The printer in connected to my desktop, and I'm new enough to wireless home networking that I cannot get it to work.

  • Answer:

Alright, so if you can find your printers dialog (in control panel, off of the start menu), you should be able to right-click on the printer you want to share with the other computers, and click "sharing." Check the "share this printer" box. Install the drivers for this printer on the XP laptop, then go to "My Network Places." Hopefully, you can see the name of your Vista machine there. Double-click on the Vista machine (enter the log in info for the VISTA computer), and you should see the printer you shared. Double-click on that, and follow the directions (saying yes to stuff) to get the printer set up. If you can't do some of these things: It may not work if you do not have a password on the Vista machine. Any computer that's sharing stuff needs a password for the connection to work. Make sure you used your name/password for Vista when you connected to the Vista computer. Restart the laptop after installing the print driver. Make sure the two computers are in the same workgroup (look this up online). Good luck.
