How to connect to the Internet on CentOS?

Can not connect to internet out of safe mode?

  • I have a netgear CGD24G modem/router combo and I have my desktop computer connected to it via ethernet cable and internet work perfectly. However when trying to connect the laptops (all DELL) to my home network they can't access the intert but they can make a solid connect to my router and I can see them on my network. What is interesting is that when manually type in the ip address i can connect to websites. I've also found that when in safe mode this problem dissapears and internet connection work perfectly. I think its also important to note that small devices like xbox and ipod can connect without any problem. I've called Dell and explained to them my problem and I was told I had a software issue and it would cost 100USD to fix. I refuse to be scamed like this. Does anyone have any information or a link that could help me? I've done the following. Performed virus scans on all computer(nothing found) Connected the laptop via ethernet cable directly to the modem(no internet) Confrimed that my wired internet has been set properly for my desktop Made sure that I was using a dynamic DNS provided from my ISP (no internet) Manualy set the DNS server to one of googles' (no internet) Completly disabled my firewall (no internet) So in short what sort of problems would casue my internet on my laptop to only connect via ip address and have no problems connecting when in safe mode.

  • Answer:

If you can connect by IP address, but not by the website’s domain name, there is a problem with DNS. (DNS means Domain Name System, and it is the process by which a domain name can be resolved to an IP address.) You may need to set Windows to obtain DNS information automatically ( http://www.ehow.com/how_6356634_fix-dns-laptop.html ). If you follow those instructions and you find that Windows is already set to obtain the DNS server address automatically, try setting “Use the following DNS server addresses” and enter one of the following sets of preferred and alternate DNS server IPs: • Your router’s IP address in both fields (your router should be a valid DNS gateway) • 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (free DNS servers from Google) • 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 (free DNS servers from OpenDNS) You may also want to check your browser’s internet settings and make sure it’s not set up to use a proxy server. One last thing you might check… go into the Device Manager, find your network interfaces, and use the Update button to see if there are updated drivers for them. Or, search Google for “name-of-network-device driver” and see if the manufacturer has issued a software update for the driver.

NO your problem is not your router. I am basing that NO because you said you CAN connect in Safe Mode If that is the case then DRIVER conflicts is your problem But it is difficult to diagnose It is very very strange that you have MULTIPLE Dell Laptops that are all doing the same thing. Very weird Do all these Laptops have the same wireless adapter? Anyway First thing is to go to CMD and type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew Not work? Then I would download the latest drivers for the Wireless adapter Then delete the adapter from device manager Click Action to scan for new devices and when it finds the adapter point the installation to the folder you put the latest drivers If this does not work I would install a Wireless USB adapter and see if that works. Sometimes I say "I have seen it all" but this is very strange. I assume your Dell Laptops are different models with different Wireless Adapters. Do your Laptops work at your friend house or at Starbucks?

That's very odd. Have you tried flushing the DNS (go to Command Prompt and type in "ipconfig/ flushdns") right after changing the DNS (to something like FreeDNS)? Have you tried using a different web browser? Have you edited/changed the hosts file? The hosts file is a way of mapping the hostname/website to an IP address.
