A DNS's job is to translate hostnames (like google.com) into IP addresses. You can configure a DNS for your connection by opening your network connections, right-clicking the correct one, choose Properties, click on TCP/IP protocol in the list, click on Properties, enable the lower of the two radio button at the bottom of the window ("Use following DNS servers" or something like it) and enter your DNS's IP(s). If you only have one you only need to specify that one. I recommend entering OpenDNS's second server IP which you can read at the bottom of their page if you are using that connection for internet. They are reliable and if your DNS should experience problems it's quite a safe fallback.
