Is it illegal to change your IP through the command prompt?

I have two different IP addresses? How do I change them?

  • So I typed into "ipconfig/all" into command prompt and found out that the IP address displayed there and the IP address that a site like "http://www.whatsmyip.org/" displays as being mine are completely different. I was banned from a chatroom by my IP and I'm looking to change it so I'm no longer banned. If I do the whole "ipconfig/release" and "ipconfig/renew" as well as changing my local network IP, will this do the trick or do I have to do something else? I'm using a laptop on a wireless connection to my home internet, if that helps. Can anyone tell me how to change my IP?

  • Answer:

if your internet provider has assigned you a dynamic ip address all you need to do is turn off your router/modem for a few minutes and when you turn it on again you will have a different ip address, if you have a static ip address there is no way for you to change it yourself, you need to ask your isp to give you a new ip address

Other answers

The one stated in your command prompt is a private IP, the one stated on websites/internet is your public IP. Try use a VPN to secretly bypass the ban filter.

The IP address you got from the whatsmyip.org site is your external IP address. That's the one assigned to you by your ISP and what all sites see when you visit them. The address you see in the ipconfig is your internal IP address which is the one assigned to you by your router.
