How to supply broadband internet with coaxial cable?

My computer only connects to the internet with its original broadband ethernet cable.?

  • Hello. Before I used to connect my computer to the internet with a long ethernet cable I bought from Tesco. Then I formatted the computer and changed broadband providers, I installed the new internet which is O2 with the original ethernet cable provided, however that cable is a little too short. I tried connecting it with various different other ethernet cables but it just won't connect. Any ideas what could be causing the problem?? Thanks in advance!!

    When you formatted the computer did you install all the drivers. You may need an ethernet driver. If you haven't installed any drivers I am surprised your computer even works. You need intel drivers and peripheral drivers. The length of the ethernet cable will not matter to much. Also reset the Router. PS I though O2 was a mobile broadband provider via the use of a dongle you plug in via the USB ports. A bit like a USB pen. You may run out of credit.

You should have a router or broadband modem attached to the filter that goes into the telephone socket. That needs a particular type of cable and it's best not to swap them around. The router connects to your computer with an ethernet cable and any cable should do that job. If it doesn't work, you've either got a crossover cable (used for a direct connection between 2 computers) or your cable is broken.

Well the problem might be to do with the type of cable your using there are two types - patch and crossover - check the writing on the side of the cable that can with your new modem and if its a crossover cable it should say so otherwise its a patch cable you will need to buy the same type of cable. Good luck!

possible it may be a cross over in lieu of a straight cable, if it red in colour? Should be blue . black or yellow?
