What does a modem and a router do?

My internet connection it quite slow for my xbox 360, what will speed it up a new modem or a new router?

• my xbox 360 has been running painfully slow and the same with my laptop as i watch a lot of media on the both of them, what would speed this up a new and better modem or a new and better router, both are reasonably old. I don't know how really the internet connection works that the modem receives it and the router spreads it about or something like that i don't know? just will a new router speed everything up or a new modem and also who is the best broadband connection with? please help guys it would mean a lot :)

  In order to get a faster connection you need a faster package because the router just provides the ports. you need to order the faster internet package, but it will cost more. Anyways, Best of Luck TheFatOne
