How to not allow access if not logged in?

How do I setup a "guest" password to allow visitors to access the internet but not files on the network?

  • We have a small office with peer to peer networking - all hard-wired to a hub and sharing the DSL internet connection. We also share files between these computers through file sharing. The computers are a mix of XP and Vista. We occasionally have guests come in with laptops who would like to use our wireless internet access. I hate to give them our WEP key to access the network, as they would also be able to access our shared files. However, I would like to allow them to use our internet access. Is there a way to setup a "guest" WEP key which would allow them to access only the internet connection and NOT our printers or shared files? Our DSL modem/router is a 2wire, if that helps. Oh, and I'm gonna need instructions as to HOW this can be done. I don't have much experience at this. Thanks!

  • Answer:

I don't think there is a way to do this with a normal router, unless you password protect the shared folders (basically, you would make the "guest account" for accessing the files). If the computers ever get upgraded to Windows 7, there is a feature called "Homegroups" that does allow for it- you authorize specific computers to share things like printers and files and it creates essentially a network within a network for those computers.
