Wireless router and wifi router are same?difference between them?

Using a wireless router as a router only... Will this slow down my WIFI internet speed?

  • Here is my setup.... Modem > Netgear wireless 802.11b router > Airport WIFI 802.11g The reason I've connected my Airport to a wireless router is that I need to also next two other devices to the internet... hence the use of the router. I have disabled the wireless broadcasting. So my question is.... is connect to the internet wirelessly going to be noticeably slower with this extra device in the chain. Does the 802.11b make a difference even though the wifi is shut off? Can this create a bottleneck for speed going into the Airport?

  • Answer:

If wireless is turned off, connecting wirelessly will be impossible. The difference between 802.11b and 802.11g is the former is 11 megabit and the latter is 54 megabit.

There is nothing wrong with using the b router as your wired gateway. The only thing I will be worried about is your actual internet speed. if your internet speed is 8mbps or more, you might experience slightly slower speeds. I came to this conclusion because I suspect your ethernet socket on the b router might be the older 10Mbps type rather than the faster 100Mbps or 1000 type. If your internet speed is up to 8meg, ur fine! Oh and if your router is 10Mbps ethernet type, local file transfer wont be great (1.1MB/s max) compared to the faster/modern ones
