How can i fix my internet connection on my dell laptop running xp?
-
ok so my internet was working excellent on my laptop. but about two weeks ago, i started to get a lot of pop-ups and some pages stopped working. so i downloaded AVG free edition to fix this. when i did the scan, it said that i have trojans and tracking items on the laptop but the program can't fix this. spybot was recommended to me. i downloaded this and got rid of some of the trojans. when i reran the scan for spybot and avg, it said that firefox had tracking items in it. so i deleted it from my computer and redid the scans once again. now there were no problems. when i restarted my computer my i downloaded firefox again. but when i started it, it says that the i can't connect to the server because of my firewall. so i went to the windows firewall and reset it to the default settings. after i reset my laptop, the little bars that you used to be in the bottom right corner aren't there now. but it says that i'm connected to the internet with an excellent signal. the internet still wasn't working. so i deleted firefox again and got internet explorer 8 and added it to the exception list on the firewall settings. someone help please? if you need any more details just tell me

Answer:
Sounds like a rootkit virus it can hijack your browser but without any windows open it can send you to advertising sites etc. Download "rootkit revealer" from Microsoft or Sysinternals and run it, These things can disable normal antiviruses and anti malware. Go to Task manager and under processes see if there is an oddnamed process sometimes just random letters and or numbers and end process. Then go to Start>run and type in msconfig and click OK, Look under the "startup" tab and uncheck the same process name if it appears there. The registry will need to be cleaned up but normal programs should be able to do that when you have disabled the rogue program. Give up on Firefox until its fixed there are currently just too many problems to rate it as a reliable piece of software. Try Orca, K-Meleon or Flock they are all free Mozilla based browsers and are all faster than Firefox. They have been produced by people who agree the Mozilla search engine is best but that firefox has gone wrong somewhere. If you go to firefox help pages or Mozillazine help pages you will see that the people there are extremely arrogant and blame everything and everybody for having problems with Firefox. Not a good sign
