How Do I add another NIC?

Can 1 laptop w/ 1 built-in wireless NIC have a USB wireless NIC added for VPN access on1 & internet on other?

  • Basically, I have a laptop with a built-in wireless NIC that I use for connection to my company's network system over the internet. Because they have restricted internet access, some of my applications that require proxy verifications are not allowed through their VPN connection. In order to avoid this problem, I would like to know if I can add another wireless USB NIC that would allow another internet access route to my laptop, while maintaining the VPN on the internal wireless NIC? I am currently using a WIn XP on an HP Compaq 8510w workstation. Internet connection is through a wireless infinitum modem over a DSL connection. Thank you in advance for any solutions that could be provided.

  • Answer:

NO! Absolutely not. Any decent VPN client will disable all internet access except for the VPN itself. Doing otherwise is a security hole. (And if anyone did manage to accomplish that on this network they'd be fired before I dumped their connection - which would be instantly.) If the network admin didn't want security he wouldn't go to the trouble of running a VPN, he'd just open ports to the world.
