How can I block sites on my laptop?

Since I'm using my laptop to access my college's network, can I block them from looking at what sites I use?

  • I have a study hall where I'm not supposed to go on Facebook because they are watching my activity while I'm in here. But I usually don't have work to do so I get bored. I use my laptop to connect to their network. Is there a way to block them from seeing what sites I visit during this study hall?

  • Answer:

No, because you have to use their internet service to get online.

use a proxy server i think

yes and no because all your network traffic goes through their network they see everything you do. A proxy will probably get you around any firewalls that they have set up, but if you don't want them to see what you are doing you need to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN creates an encrypted "tunnel" through the school's network that they can't see into, or see what you are doing. I use GoToMyPC and surf from my home computer using the remote desktop. You might try something like HotSpotVPN. They provide VPN services for situations like yours, or for people who want better security at Wi-Fi hotspots. They cost $8.88/ month

use what's called a Proxy. its a website that allows you to view other websites within it and hide the URL. free proxies are listed at proxify.net
