Joining a Server 2003 Domain problem?
-
I don't know much about networking but i have a task to make a file server. the DC is configured as in just for domain. i am trying to join a xp machine with that but its not. it can't find the domain. to my knowledge what i did was gave the xp machine default gateway, the static ip of the server but still its not getting it. though i tried cmd command and its pingining the server. i made a dns server too on 2003 server by following the MS DNS server steup. i also tried giving xp preferred dns the server ip but its not helping. what is wrong?

As long as your software firewall isn't messing things up: You didn't mention anything about a DHCP server, so I'll just answer for static IP address. your server IP address is something like 192.168.168.2 with a subnet of 255.255.0.0 the default gateway is only necessary for internet access in your case, but it would be the IP address of the router/firewall. Your router and firewall must also use the same subnet value and no two ip address can be the same. If you want to add the XP machine to the domain, the subnet of the xp box should be 255.255.0.0 with an IP address of 192.168.a.b where a is a number between 1-255 and be is 1-255 but not 2 or the same number as your router and firewall. Your XP machine will broadcast to find the server based on the domain name you specify. Now do this from the XP machine ping the IP address of the server. If successful ping the name of the server. If pinging by IP fails then you're either not plugged in correctly or your IP settings are messed up.
