How does remote desktop/access work, and under what conditions does it work? (See detail)?
-
Okay so I have some questions, thanks to anyone who can answer them! 1. How does remote desktop access work, I'm not talking about the local one though a little explanation on that would be nice. 2. Can you access a host computer if it is turned off (ie powered off, not just logged off)? If the host computer (the one you are trying to access) needs to be on then there is no point in remote access I think. The whole point of remote access is that say you are on holidays or overseas at a work conference and you need to access a particular file on your home computer. If you need to call home and ask someone to turn it on for you then it defeats the purpose of accessing it remotely, they can just email it to you. 3. Can you do it without the internet? There are various remote access applications on the internet, but can you do it with "remote access" application on your computer? Does this application use the internet? Also can you remote desktop access using the "remote access" application if your host computer (the one you are trying to access) does not have a password and username? 4. When you try to remote access, you need to put in either the ip address or your computer name. How does it know which to connect to if there may be multiple computers with the same name? And what happens if there are multiple computers with the same IP address (IP address is the internet provider address so if there are multiple computers using the same internet source they would have the same IP address, like at my home) Thanks!

Answer:
1: Remote desktop allows you to access a computer just from a remote location just as you would if you were sitting infront of the computer. 2, 3, 4: 2: There are options on newer computers that allow the computer to wake by network. 3: You can do it through a dedicated LAN or WAN but if you do not have a connection to that LAN/WAN - NO!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN 4: Read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN

Without local network & internet, remote access cannot work. The server program need to send some commands to the clients, and ask for clients doing somethings. If the remote computer was powered off, you can try to boot it by using one program named LanHelper, though it's difficult and won't be successful always. See detailed here: How to turn on remote computers across subnet via Wake-On-LAN http://www.hainsoft.com/en/howto-wake-on-lan-across-subnet.htm
