    I think what makes "webmail" something different than regular email is that webmail can be accessed through a website from any computer in the world. Email can refer to the actual message that you send, the process of sending messages, or email that is opened by a client (a program) on your computer like Outlook or Eudora. for example, if you get your email by going to a webpage like gmail.com, that would be webmail. if you have Microsoft outlook pull your email from gmail, and open it on your desktop, that's an email client. e-mail and webmail are the same. They're both e-mail stuff! Seriously though, perhaps you're asking about IMAP / POP3 protocols and web-based e-mail like Yahoo! Mail...... So simplify it best, you need an e-mail client (Such as Outlook Express or Eudora e-mail client) to access IMAP / POP3 based e-mail address. While you would need a browser and the website itself to be able to read/retrieve web-based e-mails.

E mail is usually downloaded into an e mail client (e.g. Outlook) and retrieved on your desktop. Oftentimes companies have mail servers at the company site that collect, dispatch, and retain copies of the e mail. In web mail, the actual e mail server is hosted and the recipient accesses the e mail server via a web browser. What is confusing is that web mail often can be downloaded to a mail client. However, with web mail there is no provision to house the mail server internally.

E-mail is stored on your computer and webmail isn't.
