What Is My Ip Address?

What IP address to use?

  • How will I know what IP address should I put up? I know it's between 0-255 and consists of 4 set of numbers (though I can just research an IP address from the internet) but I want to know how will I set my own IP address? Can I just assign any numbers between 0-255 as my IP address? Or there are some guidelines? Any site or tutorials that I can visit? thanks! thanks!

  • Answer:

Your ISP sets the IP of your router like 77.88.123.66 so if you want to have a NET Meeting someone that is the IP that you use the IP address for each pc connected to a router is determined by the DHCP feature of the router it is a PRIVATE IP ina SPECIAL RANGE that is Shielded from the internet(hidden) it is a number usually like 192.168.1.XXX sometimes it can be 192.168.0.XXX My private IP can be The same as Your Private IP Because it is only shared on our own networks and not out to the other side of the router ie the internet. you can alter the starting range for number so it could be 192.168.5.XXX you can also set the default allocation starting point so it could be 192.168.1.30 instead of 192.168.1.2 normally the router is allocated 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and this is the number used for your Gateway value which is your INTERNET. you can manually set values for IP and Gateway but it is NOT recommended You cannot usually choose your IP that is the External one that your ISP sets. The External IP is either STATIC(never changes) or Dynamic(set each time you login) Dynamic IP's can also be altered during your session by your ISP Dynamic IP's can annoy some games users as it means some games packages need to be reconfigured each day before playing can commence.

Your router will typically be set to use a private IP range like 192.168.x.x You can always change the scheme to use any private address... Private addresses are 10.x.x.x 172.16.x.x and 192.168.x.x You can statically assign any IP within those ranges to your machine So it works like this: Your ISP (COX, TIME WARNER, WHOEVER) gives you 68.105.17.95/27 (as example) and you plug your modem in at the demarc. from there you plug your router into the modem and log into the router via your browser using the ip address and password on the bottom of the router. example: Linksys may use 192.168.0.1 with password cisco After you're logged into the router you can make the necessary changes. good luck
