Laptop coudnt detect iphone modem after tethering.?

I tethered my iphone os 3.1.2 and trying to connect it to my laptop but cant as connection couldnt be established as laptop is not detecting the iphone as a modem during dialup setting, can someone advise what to do to make a connection and to use net on laptop via iphone.
