What is the best home broadband download speed to get?

  • I want to get great speed, but I don't want to go overboard and pay for a super-fast connection that is basically overkill. I am signing on with Comcast. What would you recommend? 1.5 Mbps download; 384 Kbps upload 12 Mbps download; 3 Mbps upload 20 Mbps download; 4 Mbps upload I can afford the 20 Mbps offer, but I don't want to get it if is completely pointless. I play games like WoW and Half Life, and watch movies, download music, and programs, etc. like any other college-age person does.

    get as much as you can afford, the more bw, the more movies and games you are gonna be able to watch and play at the same time. comcast speeds are always not very accurate ( CCIE and 10 years of testing this stuff has shown me this) , so go to speedtest.net after it's installed, and see what you are really getting, at different times of the day..

I would think that 12/3 would be fine for what you need. Start there and see how it treats you.

Hey Kendra ? Well the 12mbps download/3mbps upload is good if all your doing is just surfing the web and watching videos on youtube. But if your doing tons of downloads, and connecting routers and switches then you might want the faster connection with the 20mbps download. Hope I helped

For comparison, a commercial T1 Internet connection is only 1.5 Mbps up and down and costs several hundred dollars a month. 12 Mbps is plenty fast for a home network of 6 or less concurrent users. I personally wouldn't waste the extra money unless you really need that little bit of extra download speed. Be sure to use the money you save to buy a fast Comcast approved DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem, you'll be surprised at the difference it will make. The Motorola SB6120 is a good choice.
