What does a modem and a router do?

What's the difference between a router and a modem? And what's a good modem to get?

  • I bought a router recently. A Belkin DB with the 450Mb + 300 Mb on both 2.4 and 5GHz. And I wanted to replace this crap modem that Centurytel gave us. I fount out that I still need the modem with my router and it is a bit faster but still loses internet just as much as b4. What can I do? Is there a Modem I could get that's better or do I have to have their's? I just want faster internet without dropping every 20 minutes.

    Yes you can replace your own cable modem. I bought mine and I dont half to pay my isp that cable modem lease fee each month.. it depends on your service provider, some (like mine) build the username and the password as part of the firmware of the router so it isnt displayed and you cant connect another one. Also they might have it in your terms of service that you cant use anything other than theirs or they kick you off. the way around this i found was simple, you have a replacement router so use that, take your modem, reset it to factory settings and dissable the dhcp if it has that and leave everything else switched off, connect that to your router and use your router to do all the distribution and access and trafic. that way the modem they gave you is still in use but you have access to all the settings of the router you bought.
