How do DNS servers work?

Ok, so DNS. That means Domain Name Server, if I'm not mistaken. And DNS's are what you purchase domain names from. Such as www.example.net. Now I have a few questions. How do DNS's get the domain names they sell? And if they get them for free, if I make a DNS would I be able to get a free domain name? Like www.example.net? And if none of that is possible can you tell me how to get a domain name with a .com, .net or .org extention for free? Thanks, Tyler

DNS stands for domain name system. This is a fascinating system that enables the Internet to work. The main job of the DNS is to take the alpha domain name that you enter into your browser and translate it into the numeric IP (internet protocol) address that computers understand. The site where you register your domain holds the main DNS record for your domain. This record points to where your website is hosted. You cannot get a free domain extension. You can only purchase a cheaper one.

You would have to sign up for services such as DynDNS. There are free and paid services there Actually, your internet router has a DNS. That is what it uses to assign Internet Protocol Addresses (IPs) to your computers in your house. But that can't be used for websites. I can't help you much more than this.
