Connect to VPN causes IP routing. Why?
-
I have two computers (on opposite ends of the internet), I have control over the configuration of both: Computer A : VPN server (Windows Server 2003) Computer B : VPN client (XP 64-bit) From computer B, I add a VPN internet connection (L2TP with IPsec). When I connect to the VPN (it connects successfully), I am then unable to reach any other web sites. For example, "Ping yahoo.com" or even "ping 206.190.60.37" (the IP for yahoo.com) fails from B. As soon as I disconnect from the VPN, things work again. When connected, I have two IP addresses for Computer B: 192.168.2.4 (issued by my ISP) 192.168.17.2 (issued by the VPN) Here are the gory details: C:>ipconfig Windows IP Configuration Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : router IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.4 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 PPP adapter AWP network: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.17.2 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.17.2 Can someone enlighten me as to what is happening? What do I have configured incorrectly, and is the problem on the server (A) or client(B)? I'm using only the standard VPN networking tools provided by microsoft.

Answer:
When you use a VPN connection, the VPN takes over your LAN connection because it assumes its more important. That's why when you disconnect, everything goes back to normal on the client computer. The problem lies within the Server's firewall. Since you are connected through VPN, your are behind the server's firewall.
