What's the best digital cable system?

Digital cable internet & the new computer?

  • I just purchased/ordered a new computer and I'm unsure how to connect it/whats needed for connecting this new system to the internet. My computer now is connected through a digital cable line, same as what does to the TVs. I was not there when it was installed and don't have a grasp on how exactly it works. Was a modem of some sort put into my existing computer for this? This computer is a hub for a couple wireless laptops in the house as well. Is there is a card in my old system, can it or does it have to be transfers to my new system? (I bought a Dell Studio Hybrid). Or is it all external and I just need to plug it in to have it work? Or do I say <beep> it all and have a tech from the providing cable company come a set the darn thing up??? Someone please explain to me how digital internet connections work!

  • Answer:

Your DNS has to be refreshed. Simply reset your modem and plug the ethernet cable to your computer. If your are using a USB cable instead, you would need to install the drivers for the modem. If that doesn't work, then your computer is not obtaining the ip addresses and DNS automatically. I assume you are runnin OS Windows Vista. If so, 1. Open Control Panel 2. Double-click on Network and Sharing Center 3. Right-click on your Ethernet Adapter (modem must be connected to your computer) and click on Properties 4. Click on Internet Protocol 6(TCP/IPv6) and click properties 5. Blubble in Obtain an IPv6 address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically 6. click OK 7. Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click properties 8. Bubble Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically 9 On the top of that window you should see a Tab called Alternate Configuration, click on it and bubble in Automatic private IP address and click OK 10. Close your open windows and ENJOY...

Normally you have a seperate modem from your provider. Between your computer and modem is a network cable. Simply unplug the network cable from your computer and plug it into your new computer and you are done. Your modem will assign your new computer an IP address automatically.
