When using proxy IP for your LAN connection to bypass firewall, can work still monitor the internet activity?
-
Ive been using proxy IP addresses in my LAN connections to bypass our firewall here at work for months. I havent gotten in trouble for this yet. Im just curious to know if my work can still monitor my activity on web sites ive accessed, or how much bandwidth im using when viewing photos/videos and such. Im pretty computer savvy, but this is one thing im unsure of. I would like to feel 100% confident that im safe and free to view the content i want without getting in trouble by 'Big Brother'. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch! :-)

Answer:
your internet provider can moniter ANYTHING you do. Im almost certain that they can but i highly they wont care. The company probably has 100s of workers to handle. Im not sure if your company provides it or they get it from a independent internet provider. So just dont go to pirate bay or somthing possibly like porn and you should be fine.

Not real bright are you? IT's spend hours trying to keep out malware which spreads like wildfire in a LAN, and you by-pass the fundamental gateway so you can watch Youtube or Facebook, or who knows what. You might want to keep an eye on the "Help Wanted" section of a local paper.
Here are some things you might not know: 1. Your work network's router can log in all your connections. 2. The router knows whose computers are getting connections. 3. The router may not be able to log the actual sites you are going to (ex. facebook, youtube, myspace, etc.) because you are passing through a proxy server. However, your IT may be suspicious why you are always connected to a certain site (proxy server) whenever something is eating up the company bandwidth. They might block that proxy server's address too and call your attention. 4. Public proxy servers are high-risk sites: http://www.personalvpn.org/danger_proxy_servers.htm In case your emails and other social networking site accounts have been hacked before, the article above will explain it. Believe me, a lot of users here on Y!A have been asking how their accounts got hacked not knowing that it's because they were using proxy servers.
If it's an unsecured proxy, they can still see exactly what you are doing, though it would take some analysis to break down the proportions spent on play vs. work etc. If it's a secure proxy with SSL or ipsec, they cannot see what you are doing except that it looks suspicious on general principles, like strolling into an airport in camo gear and blackface. If you need private browsing during lunch break, do it on an iphone on the cell network and your own dollar. Subverting firewalls may be grounds for termination. If I was your sysadmin, I would not go digging in your network activity unless asked - e.g. if HR said you were always on the computer but never got any work done, and they suspected illegal activity, or if there was some trigger like an alarm went off for excessive bandwidth, or your PC was actively spreading spam or malware. It kind of depends on jurisdiction and local laws how much of your activity is considered private.
use a flash drive with a browser installed on it. bookmarks, history and all will go to the flash drive instead of the company archives. look at portableapps.com lots of flash drive goodies there.
