Confused about WiFi and 3G, 4G?

WiFi means your phone can use the same wireless connection that your laptop or wireless network computers are set up to. So if say didn't have internet access via 3G/4G/Edge, you could just use wireless/WiFi to access the internet. WiFi is also great because it does NOT count towards your data plan usage. So if you download a lot or watch a lot of videos etc and have a smaller data package, WiFi would save you money. 3G/4G/Edge etc are different speeds your phone has access to the internet (NOT WiFi) via cell towers. 4G is faster than 3G and 3G is faster than Edge (though I've heard people say 4G isn't as fast as 3G but I wouldn't know). It means if you're not in a WiFi hotspot, you can still use the internet and the speed at which you can download or watch videos would depend on how fast your internet speed via your cell tower or phone capability.

WiFi is just a wireless connection that you would find in a coffee shop, other place of business, or your home; 3G and 4G are wireless data networks that provide Internet access to mobile devices. I would be willing to bet that your phone has WiFi capabilities since my Blackberry can connect to my wireless network, but you probably primarily use 3G data instead of WiFi since WiFi is limited in range because of the router. 4G is just a faster version of 3G in all reality...there's nothing really special about it except that it uses a different frequency spectrum than 3G.

Well, they do a lot the same thing in a different way and use different resources. 3G and 4G are wireless mobile digital data transmission. They transmit data between your phone and a cell tower similar to the way you make phone calls. You have to have a data subscription with your carrier to use it. It may be limited in amount of use and cost. It passes through your carrier and on to the Internet to provide web access, email and such. Your provider is essentially providing you a portal that you pay for. Now, on the other hand is Wi-Fi. This is the same Wi-Fi that you access from your notebook on your home network, Starbucks, etc. You connect to the Internet through whatever provider is connected to the wireless access point that you connect to. It has nothing to do with your cell phone provider in most cases. In most cases, especially at home you will find it more stable and faster than 3G or 4G. One last thing, a phone that is not registered or subscribed to a carrier can be used all by itself for Wi-Fi access.
