Cant connect to the internet on my computer.?

I plugged a cable into the back of my computer to the router so that i didnt have to deal with wireless anymore... This did not work, for some reason my computer cannot read the cable. I cannot connect to the inter from my Computer... My xbox can connect wirelessly tho... And THIS computer witch is also wired to the router, works perfectly.... Please help, i have been struggling to get this computer up and running for some time now.
